The first Cummins X15 marine engine compliant with IMO Tier III standard has been delivered to the Finferries ship Finnö
The vessel Finnö of Finferries has been equipped with the latest IMO Tier III emission standard compliant Cummins X15 marine engine. The engine has a power output of 600 horsepower. This marks the first vessel to be fitted with the Cummins X15 IMO 3 emission standard compliant engine. The ship is scheduled to begin operating on the Turku Archipelago ferry route in the spring of 2022.
Since the beginning of 2021, new ships and marine engine installations are subject to the IMO’s MARPOL Convention’s NOx Tier III emission standard. This new emission standard requires an 80% reduction in the average nitrogen oxide emissions level of engines used in the year 2000. Finferries’ vessel achieves this reduction with the installation of an SCR system.
Many international parties have been involved in the testing and delivery of the new emission standard-compliant Cummins marine engine. The engine’s SCR system was supplied from Sweden. Cummins in France conducted tests and emissions measurements under the supervision of Bureau Veritas, a classification society. The engine was installed on Finferries’ vessel in Åland at the beginning of 2022.
The strictest Tier III emission standard is currently applicable in only a few water areas, such as the nitrogen oxide control areas of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. Cummins provides IMO 3 emission-compliant engines in the 11-60-liter range. For more information on Cummins marine engines compliant with the Tier III emission standard, please contact our experts!”
